Asus is on a roll on the Netbooks market as their latest product called Asus EeePC T91 is a netbook with a convertible screen turning it into a tablet PC, portable TV player, global positioning system or digital picture frame.

This new powerhouse small computer has an 8.9-inch touch screen display and uses Intel Atom Z520 processor. It also has a TV tuner and GPS chip.

Asus boldly announced that Asus P565 is the fastest smartphone in the world. Asus P565 is powered by an 800MHz Marvell processor that allows Windows Mobile 6.1 OS to run smoothly.

I know a lot of companies who have configured their SharePoint to be used in mobile devices. But I suspect the speed is not desirable. If Asus P595 is blazing fast as Asus claims to be, it should open the market for a lot of enterprise applications.

Microsoft Sales Decline Because of Netbooks

I am reading this article from InformationWeek reporting that the sales of Windows Vista just grew by 2% while the PC market grew by 10-12% and given that Microsoft’s dominance mean they should be getting a 6%-8% growth rate instead of the 2% change is reason enough to expect big things to come from Windows 7, Windows Cloud and Windows Strata as I have written—Windows Vista is Crawling the Netbooks Market.

In an excerpt of InformationWeek story:

Redmond’s problem: An increasing number of computer buyers, mostly in high-growth, price-sensitive emerging markets, are realizing that they can get by with so-called netbooks for most of their online requirements. It’s a fact that’s leaving Windows Vista out in the cold in some of the world’s fastest growing tech markets.
Netbooks, from offshore manufacturers such as Taiwan’s Asus, typically lack the horsepower to run the big and bulky Vista. But they’re fully capable of performing routine computing tasks such as e-mailing, Web surfing, and instant messaging. Many models feature the free Linux OS.
Microsoft was expecting its Client unit to post a first quarter sales gain of 6%. But the company failed to anticipate the impact of netbooks, conceded Bill Koefoed, general manager for investor relations at the software maker. “The underlying mix was different,” said Koefoed, during a conference call with analysts Thursday.
Koefoed noted that sales growth for traditional-style PCs in mature markets such as North America was flat during the quarter, while netbook sales enjoyed “strong double-digit growth” in emerging markets. “It’s too early to determine the extent to which the netbook segment is cannibalizing the traditional PC market,” said Koefoed.

Windows Vista is Crawling the Netbooks Market

In the early release and rise to popularity of Netbooks, linux seem to have found a niche market; but Microsoft came back powering and crawling its way to the Netbooks market. The release of HPs mini-note 2133, Lenovo’s S10, Asus Eee PC 1000 have seen Windows Vista taking on this market as well. Microsoft is not going to let Linux rule this space any longer and they made sure that newer versions of Netbooks are capable of running Windows Vista.

Microsoft also hinted that Windows 7 is going to find it’s way to netbooks. Even ASUS CEO Jerry Shen has announced that Windows 7 is going to run on their next version of Eee PC by the second half of next year.

It is good to know that Microsoft is taking steps to ensure that netbooks are going to explode with their products.

This week during the WinHEC, it is expected that Windows Cloud or Windows Strata is going to be announced by Microsoft and how it plays with netbooks is going to be an interesting topic to watch.

October 2009 Release for Windows 7

Reports are circulating that Windows 7 is going to be released on October 2009 to manufacturers and November to the general public. Long Zheng is the blogger who speculated the release date on two reasons:

1. WinHEC 2008 site says that Windows 7 is going to be released before the next WinHEC

2. ASUS CEO Jerry Shen told Laptop Magazine that the next Eee PCs would be running Windows 7 in the second half of next year

The Windows 7 release date is a good guesstimate by Zheng but it would be foolish to rely on it in your decision of moving into Windows 7 and skipping Windows Vista. It is possible that the release date of Windows 7 pushes to 2010 and stable release as far as 2011.
