SharePoint for iPhone and iPad
I heard a lot of buzz about SharePoint on iPhone and iPad in the last two years and silently I am happy that there aren't any applications that support this natively since it would be an added mobile device in our architecture and development tasks.
I already lose work and life balance on the existing list of mobile devices being tested on SharePoint and I am content on testing SharePoint on the Safari mobile browser in iPhone. But it seems luck has run out and Newsgator went ahead and released the first native SharePoint application on iPhone dubbed as SharePoint iPhone client. Aside from this, they have another application also capable of running on Apples' iPad. Great, an additional device for our testing.
Anyways, I know lots of SharePoint colleagues and users have iPhone and they would be pleased on this application from Newsgator. The things they can do with SharePoint on their iPhone (iPhone client) are as follows:
1. Be able to send status updates, videos and photos to Social Sites
2. Be able to comment on and see notifications when others comment on or like your updates
3. Be able to participate in community discussions;
4. Be able to target a question to a person or group
5. Be able to see updates that you're radiating to others
6. Be able to view updates from a specific colleague or community
7. Be able to look up contact info for colleagues
8. etc..
The things they can do with SharePoint on their iPad (iPad client) are as follows:
1. View a "global conversation" page to be able to see all status updates in the enterprise as it happens.
2. Have the ability to target messages to a person or community
3. Be able to view community-specific update streams and conversation modules
4. Be able to e-mail status updates and notifications
5. Has hashtag support, enabling impromptu discussions through use of the "#" character;
6. Availability of the "like" buttons to easily indicate positive feedback
7. Have a notification email for likes and comments
8. Ability to add a comment by replying to a notification email
9. Be able to use standard and custom filtering of status updates and activities
10. Be able to view photo and video inline attachments
11. Availability of new APIs for consuming and publishing activity information.
That's a lot of features and thanks to Newsgator for coming up with these applications even if it adds more work for us. On the bright side, continuous work is a good thing, financially.
You can download these application through Newsgator's Social Site 3.0.
