Day 5: Migration Workshop

Below are my actual notes during the Migration Workshop session here at the SharePoint Conference. (Please forgive any wrong grammar. (It is like writings from the old age where the pen and exact document by famous people are kept in a museum).

Reference Models: Portal/Web Applications

Pre-Migration (All Migration Paths)

Upgrade farm to WSS V2 SPS required

Install Pre-requisites: WinFX 3.0ASP.NET 2.0—TIP: Test custom web parts with ASP.NET 2.0—Windows Workflow Foundation
Windows Server 2003 Non-R2/ASP.NET 2.0 Installations—This Windows SharePoint Services virtual server has not been configured for use with ASP.NET 2.0.50727.42. For more information, please refer to Knowledge Base

Pre-Migration
Run & test a full backup
Subdivide all large content databases—25-50 GB recommended by SQL Server and SharePoint Product Groups—MS IT standard for mximum content database size of 35 GB—Else upgrade/migration will take a long time

Look for the SPSite manager tool. Look for SharePoint Utility and Split Tool for Migration.

General Upgrade Migration Path:

Pre-Migration—Same as “Pre-Migration (All Migrtion Paths) earlier in this deck—Select initial WSS 2.0 site structure

Post-Migration—Common Issues and Best Practices—Automatically create databases—May be manually configured if necessary
—Need one 2007
