Dell Pulling in $3 Million from Twitter

Dell is pulling in $12.3 billion dollars in revenues and getting a few million dollars from their Twitter participation might not be their cup of coffee. Wrong! Dell has reported that they have pulled in $3 million dollars because of utilizing Twitter. A million dollars is still a lot of money even for a billion dollar firm; plus compare this to the amount of operational cost to participate in Twitter, Dell finds a very good case on using this social network phenomenon.

The amount is a result of clicks from users thru their Twitter posts where they initially made $1 million USD in the first 6 months.

Dell’s chief blogger, Lionel Menchaca, said they would be watching over the results whether they are tracking at the right level.

The business model of Twitter does not guarantee exponential growth in the millions of dollars and they have yet to determine how to turn their phenomenal status into gold; companies like Dell for instance have turned this network to their advantage. This tells you that technology alone doesn’t guarantee dominance but strong business acumen and the power to turn things into money is the integral part of growing any business.

Outsourcing services are down and Cognizant are fighting during trial times. As written: Outsourcing provider warned of mild near-term weakness but expects to make it up later.

Cognizant Technology Solutions has held up well despite reduced capital spending budgets among customers for its outsourcing services. Even though the tech company warned that sales growth will be minimal in the near-term, its business is expected to do well as companies seek to drastically cut costs.

Cognizant said its clients continue to see value in its company-tailored services—especially as business conditions deteriorate.

Enterprise IT Articles on 14 Feb 09: While Business Intelligence Needs to Move from Passive to Active

I agree with David Linthicum that companies should be able to better analyze their data to optimize their business operations. This is particularly, true in this economic crisis where companies are tightening their belts:

As written: Okay, getting the entire vendor created marketing crud out of the way, I’m seeing business intelligence fall into two very broad categories, passive and active:

Passive, being most of what business intelligence is out there, or the ability to analyze, abstract, and define information that’s more than 78 hours old, but typically the information is much older.

Active, meaning looking at decision support information as close to real time as you can get it.

Active is much more valuable than passive, especially when mixed with passive historical information.

So, what I’m saying is that the real value from business intelligence is providing a dashboard into the business, and the ability to take corrective action to optimize the business. Current data mixed with historical data. While we’ve been here before around the use of BAM (business activity monitoring), we’ve focused mostly around monitoring and not action. We do have companies today, such as Vitria, that are providing technology in this area, but I’ve yet to see wide spread adoption even though the value is tremendous.
