SharePoint 2010 is coming straight ahead and we only need to wait a little over two months before the next version of SharePoint officially comes out.

I am reading an article over at SFGate about the boost that Enterprise 2.0 is getting. According to the writer, Shane O’Neill, he feels that Enterprise 2.0 is not just a catchphrase but the integration of social networking software in the enterprise is seeing bigger and greater adoption.

He note that cultural clashes have diminished because of the stronger demand for integration of social tools in the workplace—”
Workers, particularly younger ones, are demanding that the social tools they use via Facebook and Twitter spill over into the workplace. In addition, the cultural clashes that once prevented senior management from adopting social tools are waning.”

Facebook gets awarded with the patent for News Feeds which is gigantic in the social networking, social computing, and digital collaboration.

When I attended the SharePoint Conference in 2006 in Seattle, one of the key features discussed on SharePoint 2007 was the social computing aspect and the speaker emphasized the web parts capable of adding feeds. As a demo, the speaker showed how easy it was to add news feeds, and use these feeds for digital collaboration. It was discussed how important feeds and news feeds was for SharePoint and collaboration within the enterprise organization. Microsoft has great intentions but the problem was they failed to acquire the patent for it.

Passlogix is an enterprise software company which build solutions across security and authentication. Their latest product allows any type of device from identification devices, national badges, access cards, one-time password tokens, and biometrics to login to Windows.

The concept is great but I don’t see companies embracing this broadness as most enterprise are clear and strict on using proprietary technology for their access rights as part of their overall security guidelines and policies. The more authentication medium the enterprise have, the bigger governance, administration, and audits you need to employ to ensure there are no loopholes in your security system. The cost of maintaining disparate security architecture can easily go overboard and affect your bottomline.

I am reading a post on SFGate where they are discussing the reports by Forrester about the Overkill features of SharePoint 2010.

The study conducted by Forrester is titled “SharePoint Server 2010: An Evolutionary Step toward Content-Centric Middleware, generally gives high marks for the improvements Microsoft has made to the server, which has become one of its fastest selling products of all time. SharePoint 2010 is expected to ship in June.”

The report however says that companies who see a gap in SharePoint 2007 should move to SharePoint 2010 particularly around social networking. Forrester principal analyst Rob Koplowitz, says that SharePoint 2010 should be considered a major strategic move for users who are not on SharePoint; but reminds to look at the features closely since SharePoint might be a “hammer” but not everything is a “nail”.

I am not feeling good on SharePoint 2010 the same way I felt good about SharePoint 2007. On a number of proposals and presentations, clients are putting off SharePoint 2010, for another year or two as they have everything they need on SharePoint 2007.

Also, clients have already developed a 2-3 year roadmap for SharePoint 2007 which includes building the skills, purchasing requirements, securing resources and the like; that disrupting this plan for SharePoint 2010 doesn’t stand out as a priority item.

It was a different case with SharePoint 2007 wherein the features were already overdue or just in time as SharePoint 2003 lacked so many features that rendered it productive in the current environment when SharePoint 2007 was launched.
