Ring down Firebar Conference Server launched by XOP Networks

XOPNetworks creator of a digital collaboration bridge (DCB), has launched Ringdown Firebar Conference Server (RFCS), which acts as “Crash Nets” on campus locations which are prone to emergency situations like Chemical plants, oil and gas installations, airports, including Air Force base. When an emergency occurs, anyone can lift a Crash Net phone which automatically triggers a dial out calls to other crash net red phones. All the responders would then be linked to an audio conference with the initiator of the call, this is when collaboration starts.

The Ring down Firebar Conference Server runs on top of a Linux platform uses a distributed FXS to VoIP gateway architecture which allows use of tupical anolg emergency “Red Phones” as well as using VoIP/SIP phones.

Beginning in 2003, XOP Networks embarked on developing a next generation IP based service and application platform. Realizing this vision, we shipped our first product, a Digital Collaboration Bridge (DCB) in 2004. A DCB combines rich Audio Conferencing with Desktop sharing, Application sharing and White boarding, thus creating a collaborative experience for the end users. Leveraging the success of the DCB, the product portfolio was expanded in 2005 to include the Group Alerting and Conferencing Server (GACS). The GACS allows mass notification messages to be dispatched over a variety of communications networks, while it brings an organization’s brain trust into a quick audio conference. In 2009 we introduced Ring down Firebar Conference Server (RFCS) that allows a conference to be set up simply by lifting a handset on an analog or IP phone. Several other enhancements were introduced including support for Secure conferencing, SMS driven instant-conferencing, Group SMS and Voice SMS capabilities. The product line was also hardened for use in defense networks.

Microsoft says Oracle’s strategy is grounded in 1960s

Oracle Sun Deal Microsoft’s president of Server & Tools, Bob Muglia, points out that Oracle CEO Larry Ellison’s comments on their purchase of Sun promotes stagnation and is a “Back to the Future” strategy. Larry Ellison proclaims that their strategy of one-stop-shop is the 2010 version of IBM’s 1960’s strategy which made them the most important company in the world.

Microsoft has been promoting digital collaboration and enterprise integration to make sure that disparate technologies would be able to communicate and combine under one roof. This approach clearly means that Microsoft doesn’t aim to be the one-stop-shop vendor but instead they want to be the central piece of various vendors thru their SharePoint platform and integration tools (current Business Connectivity Services in SharePoint 2010).

Facebook Gets News Feeds Patent, a key Collaboration Feature

Facebook News Feeds Patent Facebook gets awarded with the patent for News Feeds which is gigantic in the social networking, social computing, and digital collaboration.

When I attended the SharePoint Conference in 2006 in Seattle, one of the key features discussed on SharePoint 2007 was the social computing aspect and the speaker emphasized the web parts capable of adding feeds. As a demo, the speaker showed how easy it was to add news feeds, and use these feeds for digital collaboration. It was discussed how important feeds and news feeds was for SharePoint and collaboration within the enterprise organization. Microsoft has great intentions but the problem was they failed to acquire the patent for it.

Automatic device pairing system is a pending Microsoft patent great for Collaboration

Microsoft has filed a patent on pairing devices which allows automatic pairing of devices over a short range using either Bluetooth or Wireless USB. After two devices have already paired it can pair with other related devices.

The patent also mentions that a public key cryptography would be used to ensure a secure connection between devices.
