SharePoint 2010 is coming straight ahead and we only need to wait a little over two months before the next version of SharePoint officially comes out.

Our infrastructure engineers have installed and updated our SharePoint servers with the latest SharePoint Service Pack 2; however, I have just read from the SharePoint product team blog that there is a bug on the SP2 which changes the expiration date of the SharePoint site to 180 days after SP2 is deployed regardless of the full license you have installed. A SharePoint hotfix is underway, but I would definitely log this as a risk first thing in the morning tomorrow. We are in critical milestone paths on my current SharePoint project right now, and if this hotfix is not going to come out before we hit our deployment, our SharePoint infrastructure engineers need to rollback the system to SharePoint Service Pack 1.

As per SharePoint product team announcement:

We take product quality seriously and make every effort to avoid and resolve issues that adversely impact our customers. Unfortunately, we have recently discovered a bug with Service Pack 2 (SP2) that affects all customers that have deployed it for SharePoint Server 2007.

During the installation of SP2, a product expiration date is improperly activated. This means SharePoint will expire as though it was a trial installation 180 days after SP2 is deployed. The activation of the expiration date will not affect the normal function of SharePoint up until the expiration date passes. Furthermore, product expiration 180 days after SP2 installation will not affect customer’s data, configuration or application code but will render SharePoint inaccessible for end-users.

We are working to release a hotfix to automatically fix this issue. A manual work-around is currently available and involves customers re-entering their Product ID number (PID) on the Convert License Type page in Central Administration. For more information and detailed steps please read this KB article.

We want to assure our customers that this issue does not impact data integrity or their SharePoint deployment in any other way.

High definition video is choppy on Windows 7 and this is because of it’s native DTV/DVD Decoder files.

Below are the steps to change the DTV/DVD Decoder file in Windows 7:

1. Open Windows Registry

2. Go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftDirectShowPreferred”

3. Right click on “Preferred” folder and click on “Permissions”

4. Click on “Advanced”, then “Owner”, “Administrators”

Microsoft is providing free Windows 7 support for it’s release candidate for their Microsoft partners. The Release Candidate of Windows 7 Build 7100 started shipping on May 5, 2009 and the support is not available to other participants like the Windows 7 Customer Preview Program.

Microsoft partners have a “Partner Online Technical Community” where they get free, unlimited support from over 50 Microsoft technologists.

I am not actually thrilled with the ability of these Microsoft technologists running the Partner Online Technical Community; although for most partners, they should be valuable freebies from Microsoft.
