SharePoint 2010 Business Connectivity Services

Corey Roth from Sys-con demonstrates the use of Business Connectivity Services (BCS) in SharePoint 2010. Business Connectivity Services is the Business Data Catalog (BDC) in SharePoint 2007 which allows external data to be integrated into SharePoint.

In Corey’s example he shows another cool feature of SharePoint 2010 which is “external lists” where SharePoint can get data from different databases and webservices and perform Create, Update, Delete (CRUD) operations on the data.

SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2

I am currently downloading SharePoint 2010 beta version and would probably take a week or two to install and play around it. One of the things on my mind is whether I would upgrade my current SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008.

Going through some readings I found the following posts helpful:

SharePoint 2010 Better Together with SQL 2008 R2 Database Enhancements Top 10 (SharePointJoel)

Top 10 SQL 2008 Features for SharePoint IT Pros (Joel @ MSDN)

High Availability Improvements in SharePoint 2010 (SharePoint MadScientist)

Top 10 Features of SQL 2008 R2 (Database Journal)

SQL and Storage Considerations for SharePoint 2010 (SharePoint MadScientist)

SQL Server 2008 and SharePoint 2010 is a very powerful combination where most of the improvements are around infrastructure, & administration. At a developer level, blob, external lists, & PowerPivot are great additions. My interest on installing SharePoint 2010 is learning its architecture and development and as such I am more likely to upgrade my SQL Server 2005 VMWare to SQL Server 2008.

HP Skyroom Videoconferencing Improves Digital Collaboration

Video ConferencingI work in an off-shore location which means my environment is an outsourced environment and projects and clients I am working on are mostly based in the United States, Europe or Australia. For the past 5 years I mostly haven’t seen the people I am working, talking to for hours during day to day synch-up meeting and calls. While some of the project managers have gone to visit us here in the Philippines, majority of the people are faceless. The common phrase we blurt out on rare occasions we meet the people we are working with is, “putting a face to the name”. What’s fascinating is that after we have put a face to the name, the working relationships seems to improve and some issues and concerns don’t get escalated easily.

Looking Ahead for Windows 8

Windows 7 has not yet been released but I am already reading some predictions on what Windows 8 is going to be. In Randall Kennedy’s post, he discusses the items that would most likely be included in the Windows 8 release. Pretty early, but some interesting items which include:

  1. Prediction 1: No more 32-bit

  2. Prediction 2: Mesh is big

  3. Prediction 3: App-V makes its mark

  4. Prediction 4: Windows gets fatter

  5. Prediction 5: Subscribe today

Milo’s point of view

It is too early to think about Windows 8, or about the successor of Microsoft Windows 7. The features in Windows 8 would largely depend on the success of Windows 7. If latest operating system of Microsoft fails to eclipse Windows XP, we might see a new operating system built on cloud computing sooner than we expect. If Windows 7 becomes successful and indications show that it would most likely be able to overtake Windows XP then Microsoft might hang on to this software longer than we expect.

As for the features above:

  1. Prediction 1: No more 32-bit—I don’t think Microsoft is removing the 32-bit, unless a strong deal with Intel makes this happen.

  2. Prediction 2: Mesh is big—It has always been big, let’s see.

  3. Prediction 3: App-V makes its mark—I agree on this one.

  4. Prediction 4: Windows gets fatter—I don’t think so, maybe the Ultimate would be fatter but I see Microsoft pushing for thinner software that would be able to run on netbooks or smartbooks.

  5. Prediction 5: Subscribe today—It would always be a balance between subscription and packaged software. Microsoft would still push the operating system wrapped in a box.

Windows 7 Requires Global Readiness for Sign-off

Internet is buzzing that Microsoft is already done with the Windows 7 development, code freeze has been implemented and the build release is already sent to manufacturers.

Microsoft apparently is correcting these reports and Microsoft Communications Manager Brandon LeBlanc issued an official status update on where they are on the build.

According to him Windows 7 build is already close but they haven’t signed off on the operating system. He emphasizes that they are signing-off on Windows 7 when they are already ready and in a previous statement they were targeting the 2nd half of July for the RTM version.

SharePoint 2010 Sneak Peek

The SharePoint 2010 sneak peek is already available via the Microsoft SharePoint site.

Image

It contains a video for overview, IT Professionals and Developers. I am still going through the site myself and would update you on the things I have seen.

Bing, The Last Stand

Microsoft has struggled and battled to increase their market share in the search engine wars. A measly 8% is what Microsoft has achieved despite the millions of dollars, time & effort, and everything Microsoft has put up in this technology area. It is a fact that the software leader was way too late in recognizing the power of search engines and they have watched and stayed on the sidelines while Google created the buzz, grabbed market share and finally became the leader in the search engine industry.

Microsoft playing catch up, launched their search service through MSN, but after a few years, it didn’t go anywhere.

How to Guide: SharePoint 2010 Migration or Upgrade from SharePoint 2007

SharePoint 2010 is around the corner and similar to the release of SharePoint 2007, developers, architects, managers and stakeholders were getting their hands on information on migration or upgrade from their existing SharePoint 2003 site to SharePoint 2007.

I am still finding bandwidth to research migration from SharePoint 2003 or SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010; but I suppose the following approaches would still be applicable to the SharePoint 2010 move:

1. In-place upgrade
2. Gradual upgrade
3. Database migration (advanced)
4. Site & List Definition upgrade

I have heard from my colleague network that a number of large enterprise are inquiring and considering waiting and migrating to SharePoint 2010 before major enhancements are pushed forward; but until now, there is still no official recommendation on the upgrade strategies and approach on SharePoint 2010. The best option we can do at this time is to run the stsadm –o preupgradecheck. This stsadm command would create an XML and HTML report based on the following files:

1. Preupgradecheck.xml files
2. OssPreUpgradeCheck.xml
3. WssPreUpgradeCheck.xml

From the report, you can go ahead analyze the results , and try to match it up on the upgrade options I have outlined above.

I would be updating this page for a robust information on the SharePoint 2010 migration. Keep this page as a hot item for now.

The Official Microsoft Windows 7 Pricing

Earlier reports indicate that Microsoft is going to sell Microsoft Windows 7 much higher than Windows Vista, making it the highest paid consumers operating system so far.

On Wednesday, Microsoft did the opposite. They have announced the pricing for Windows 7 and it looks cheaper than Windows Vista, at least for the promo. The upgrade from either Windows XP or Windows Vista Windows 7 Home premium only cost $49, Windows 7 Professional for only $99. This promo runs starting Friday, June 26 until July 11 and only good an a certain unspecified limit.

The pricing announced by Microsoft coincides with the leaked out internal memo from Best Buy through its employees.

The upgrade promo is available through Amazon, Best Buy, Microsoft’s own store, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Costco, Staples, Wal-Mart and other retailers.

Microsoft Corporate Vice President Brad Brooks feels the pricing is a very good deal: “That truly is a price that we have never even come close to in terms of an operating system release. “We’ve still got a business to run.”

Brad also adds that Windows 7 is pricier than the Snow Leopard which is only charging $29, but he argues that Snow Leopard is just a Leopard upgrade—“Even their chief software architect called (Snow Leopard) an upgrade of Leopard. The way I look at it, its a service pack and we don’t charge for service packs.”

Aside from the current promos, below are the pricing for the boxed Windows 7 on October 22 for those who already own a Windows license:

1. $119 for Windows 7 Home Premium

2. $199 for Windows 7 Professional

3. $219 for Windows 7 Ultimate

Below are the pricing for the boxed Windows 7 on October 22 for those who do not own a Windows license:

1. $199 for Windows 7 Home Premium

2. $299 for Windows 7 Professional

3. $319 for Windows 7 Ultimate

The Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade is lower by $40 from the product’s original price. The Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate versions are priced similar to Microsoft Windows Vista while the Home Premium is lower by as much as $239.

To note, upgrade prices only apply to users moving from either Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7; however, clean installation is applicable from Windows Vista to Windows 7 only.

The current pricing of Windows 7 is cheap considering the upcoming promo, do you plan to avail of the upgrade discounts?

Smart Bro Prepaid Dial failed, do you want to retry?

image

I cannot understand how incompetent the technical people at Smart Philippines are. I always had problems with their Smart Bro Wifi, and now using their Smart Bro Prepaid I get the error message: “Dial failed, do you want to retry?”

After calling their technical support, the guy named Thomas kept me waiting telling me he could not see my number in his computer. He then proceeded to tell me he needs to fill out document reports and send email to the support team to help me out within the next 24 hours. Damn, I do not need internet in the next 24 hours as I would be connected in three hours time. My pressing need is within 30 minutes.

In this booming broadband age, people have a lot of options—Sun Wireless Broadband, PLDT, Globe Broadband, MyDestiny, SkyCable, etc. Consumers would not be happy waiting for 24 hours to have their problems fixed as they can easily switch vendors. In the last four months, my Sun Wireless Broadband has been phenomenal, too bad as I accidentally left it at home.
